Professional Bio

Greg Young is a seasoned corporate and community leader with over 30 years of experience spanning sales and marketing, relationship management, strategy, and non-profit governance. Appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom, he currently serves as the Senior Deputy Commissioner for Corporations and Financial Institutions at the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation, overseeing state-chartered banks, credit unions, mortgage and payday lenders, and money transmitters. In this role, he manages a $60 million budget and a team of more than 340 staff.

Before his appointment, Greg led Umpqua Bank’s Community Lending division, advancing homeownership in underserved communities, and previously held leadership roles at American Express, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and New York Life. His career also includes time in the U.S. Senate with Edward M. Kennedy and a historic election to the Martinez City Council in 2024 as its first African-American councilmember. A dedicated educator and community advocate, Greg serves on the Regulatory Committee of the Conference of State Bank Supervisors and the UC Berkeley Alumni Association Board, among others. He holds degrees from UC Berkeley, the University of San Francisco, and St. Mary’s College.
